Ingredients

Cookies (2 dozen)

  • 2
    sticks Butter
    room temp
  • 1
    scant cup Granulated sugar
  • 1
    tsp Vanilla extract
  • Kosher salt
  • 1
    Egg
  • 3
    cups All purpose flour
  • 1/4
    cup Milk

Royal Icing

  • 2
    lbs Powdered Sugar
  • 6
    Egg whites
  • 1
    lemon Juice of
  • Gel food colors

Instructions

Cookies 1: Preheat oven to 375°F. In a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix cream butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.

Cookies 2: Once combined, scrape down bowl and beat in egg on medium until incorporated. Add half of flour, mixing on low until just combined.

Cookies 3: Add milk and mix on low until just combined. Scrape sides of bowl. Add remaining flour, and mix until dough begins to come together. If dough feels very dry, add a small splash of milk

Cookies 4: On a large, flat surface, knead dough into a smooth ball. Working in batches, roll out the dough with a rolling pin to 1⁄4 inch thickness and cut out shapes with a cookie cutter. Lightly dust surface with flour for easier rolling.

Cookies 5: Space cut cookies on a baking tray 2 in. apart. Bake for 16-18 minutes, rotating baking tray halfway through, until just golden on edges. Let cool completely before icing.

Royal Icing 1: In a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, add powdered sugar, egg whites, and splash of lemon juice. Mix on low for 2-3 minutes to combine.

Royal Icing 2: Up speed to medium and beat for 3-4 minutes, until icing volumizes and becomes whiter. Add food colors if desired.

Royal Icing 3: For outlining cookies, icing should form soft peaks. Fill piping bag fitted with a piping tip and outline cookies slowly. For flooding cookies, add a small splash of water and mix until you reach desired consistency. A good test for ideal

Royal Icing 4: Fill a piping bag fitted with a piping tip and flood cookies slowly. 7. Let iced cookies fully dry 2 days before painting (drying time may vary on humidity)

Painting 1: In a paint palette or on a dinner plate, add swatches of desired gel food colors. Dilute colors with a bit of water to paint.

Painting 2: Paint on cookies with paint brushes as you would watercolors on paper. Keep a small bowl of water and paper towel handy to clean brush as you paint
